Let’s start from the beginning. What was the prompt you responded to? Can you describe it for me?
My prompt includes two photos. Both photos feature the same subjects: two crumpled, colored paper bags. One bag is positioned between two pieces of square glass, while another bag is placed on top. The first photo is illuminated with soft pink lighting, creating a gentle and warm ambiance. The second photo, however, is captured using night blue-toned lighting, lending a mysterious feeling.
That’s lovely. And what was your first impression of it? What did it make you think of?
Upon seeing the photos, the image of a sandwich came to mind. The crumpled paper bags reminded me of the traditional Chinese method of packaging meat and food. The folded and layered appearance of the bags resembles the layers of bread and fillings found in a sandwich, evoking a connection between the two visuals.
How did you get started? Can you walk me through your process?
I created this artwork using my iPad. To begin, I selected a photo of meat and manipulated it to resemble the shape of the paper bag in the prompt photo. I then added a transparent layer between the pieces of meat, giving the illusion of a reflection in the water. To enhance the overall composition, I inverted the meat images. Lastly, I incorporated a soft blue background to match the ambiance and mood conveyed in the prompt photos.
I think it works really well. How does this piece relate to the rest of your work?
Typically, I use my iPad to create drafts for my mural artwork. The process of drawing the artwork draft on my iPad is similar to my creative process for murals. However, this particular piece of work has a more playful and enjoyable tone for me, as it is not intended for commercial purposes. It allows me to explore my creativity freely and have fun with the artistic process.
I see what you mean. It's a really fun piece. I’ve seen some of your murals and they’re so big and involved! Do you prefer working on big things like that or little pieces like this?
As an artist, I engage in creating both large-scale murals and small paintings. I find enjoyment in working with different sizes, as it allows me to pursue different objectives within my practice. Creating small-scale artwork provides an opportunity for me to build a solid foundation in my artistic skills, focusing on aspects such as composition and technique. On the other hand, working on larger pieces offers me greater possibilities to explore various art forms and intricate details.
I can imagine. I keep working bigger and bigger, but I have a long way to go before I fill a whole wall. Tell me about your relationship with food. Do you generally use food imagery in your work? Does meat inspire you?
I love food and believe that the way people from different backgrounds cook and prepare food offers fascinating insights into their cultures. It's remarkable how food can serve as a gateway to understanding and appreciating diverse traditions.
I agree. Everyone eats!
In terms of my art, I typically do not incorporate food directly into my creations. Instead, I draw inspiration from my mood and emotions when creating artwork. This approach allows me to explore various themes, concepts, and expressions, focusing on capturing the essence of my inner world. However, I recognize the potential for food to be a rich and meaningful subject for artistic exploration in the future, given its connection to culture, identity, and sensory experiences.
Oh yes, lots of artists are inspired by food. We’ll see how the person who gets your Sandwich as a prompt feels about it. Do you like working from a prompt?
I think that working from a shared prompt can be a fascinating and engaging experience for artists. It allows for diverse interpretations and encourages artistic community and learning.
What’s your advice to another new person getting started in this project?
Follow your first impression!
Okay!
